Classical vs. Contemporary Pilates (and Lagree): Where Does Pilates Stand Today?

Pilates has gone from a niche rehabilitation method to a global movement philosophy, practiced in studios, gyms, online platforms, and even living rooms. But with its growth has come a swirl of terminology, schools of thought, and hybrid methods.

One of the most common questions I hear:“What’s the difference between Classical and Contemporary Pilates, and how does Lagree fit into all this?”

Let’s explore that, and talk about where Pilates stands today.

ME loving what I do, classical Pilates.
ME loving what I do, classical Pilates.

Classical Pilates: Rooted in the Original Method

Classical Pilates stays faithful to the original method developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, which he called Contrology. This system was designed as a way to unify the body and mind through precise, intentional movement. Joseph believed that poor posture, inefficient breathing, and lack of core strength were at the root of many modern ailments. Contrology was his answer — a structured sequence of exercises performed on the mat and traditional apparatus like the Reformer, Cadillac, and Wunda Chair.

Classical Pilates reflects this philosophy by emphasising:

  • Precision and control

  • A flowing, uninterrupted sequence of movement

  • Minimal modifications or props

  • A deep connection to the "Powerhouse" (core, glutes, and inner thighs)

It’s a disciplined yet elegant system. With consistent practice, there’s a unique satisfaction in mastering the same order over time, refining technique, building strength, and cultivating alignment from the inside out.

I found this book so helpful to understand Joseph Pilates Contrology, and his thought process behind it all. It really is a good read "Return to Life Through Contrology by Joseph Pilates" 👉 Get it here

Contemporary Pilates: Evolving With the Times

Contemporary Pilates builds on the classical foundation but incorporates:

  • New scientific research (biomechanics, neuromuscular function)

  • Influences from other movement practices (physiotherapy, dance, yoga)

  • Modifications for injury rehab, pregnancy, age, and more

  • Props and creativity to keep sessions adaptive and engaging

This is where my own teaching style sits, blending classical structure with modern insights to support real people with real bodies and real-life needs. I definitely still tend to gravitate towards the classical Pilates style with some creative extras.

What About Lagree? Isn’t That Pilates Too?

Lagree is often confused with Pilates, but let’s clear this up:

Lagree is not Pilates. It was developed by Sebastien Lagree, who used Pilates as a springboard but designed a completely new system, both in philosophy and equipment.

Here’s a simple breakdown:

Pilates

Lagree

Focuses on mind-body connection, breath, alignment, and control

Focuses on high-intensity, low-impact strength and endurance

Usually slower, controlled, and focused on deep core engagement

Performed at a faster pace with high time-under-tension

Uses traditional Pilates equipment like Reformer, Chair, Cadillac

Uses the Megaformer, a machine designed specifically for Lagree

Can be rehabilitative and adaptable for all fitness levels

Typically more intense and fitness-focused

Emphasizes form and technique over burn

Often prioritizes muscle fatigue, cardio intensity, and burn

Lagree is essentially a strength-training workout inspired by the Reformer but is far more intense and cardiovascular. It’s often compared more to a bootcamp on a moving machine than traditional Pilates.

Both are valuable, it just depends on your goals.

So, Where Does Pilates Stand Today?

Pilates has grown into a flexible, responsive, and intelligent movement system. It’s no longer about fitting one mold, it's about meeting the body in front of you.

Today, you’ll find:

  • Classical Pilates lovers who cherish the original order

  • Contemporary movers who need modifications, creativity, and rehab options

  • Lagree fans who want high-intensity results with low joint impact

  • Hybrids that blend strength training, dance, mindfulness, and more

And that’s the beauty of where we are: there’s space for all of it.

My Take as a Movement Professional

As a Biokineticist and Pilates instructor, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of movement, not just on strength, but on confidence, pain, recovery, and longevity.

Whether you're practicing Classical or Contemporary Pilates, or even exploring Lagree, the key is this: Are you moving with intention, alignment, and awareness?

Are you listening to your body rather than overriding it?

That’s where sustainable results live.

Final Thoughts

Pilates isn’t just a method, it’s a philosophy of movement, and just like people, it evolves.

So instead of choosing sides, choose what works for your body right now.

Try a Classical session for foundational strength.

Join a Contemporary class for adaptability and creativity.

Test a Lagree workout if you’re up for a challenge and want to sweat.

But always choose with integrity, not hype.
